Tsitsikamma
The Garden of the Garden Route welcomes you to the area
the ancient San people called the place of many waters.
This land lies between the sea and the Tsitsikamma Mountains and stretches
from the Bloukrans River in the West to Clarkson in the East.
Beautiful indigenous forest, protected by the State, is home to centuries old
trees such as Yellowwood, Stinkwood, Hard Pear, Ironwood, Kamassi and many others.
Over the millennia, rivers have cut awesome gorges through the coastal plateau
as they flow down to the spectacular coastline. This paradise of forest, fynbos
and sea is home to birds, antelope, bushpig, honey badgers and the occasional
leopard. Whales and dolphins are constant visitors to the coast.
Tsitsikamma is a khoi word meaning "place of abundant or sparkling water".
The region stretches from the Bloukrans River in the west to Eerste Rivier
in the east, is bordered on the north by the imposing Tsitsikamma mountains
and in the south by the Indian Ocean.
The area is covered in large tracts of indigenous forest, commercial plantation
and Fynbos. Deep river gorges cleft the plateau as they make their way down
to the sea, creating spectacular waterfalls and deep kloofs.
The Tsitsikamma is, if not already, fast becoming the dairy region of South
Africa. Together with the KZN midlands it is the area which is the most economical
for Dairy Farming because of the climate and rainfall it is possible to produce
good pastures all year round and the cows are milked off the pastures. There
are two methods of Dairy Farming nl. The Pasture Based System and the TMR System.
The Pasture Based System is the most economical as cows eat mostly grass to
produce milk, the TMR System ( Total Mixed Ration) is exspencive as cows are
fed a mixed ration which become very expencive, because they are very dependant
on the grain prices, which are very volatile because of below average harvests
as well as demand for bio-fuel.
